Until a few decades ago, the rivers of Isfahan, Iran, were sustained by abundant water. Today, overpopulation, excessive groundwater extraction for irrigation, and the mismanagement of natural resources have disrupted the balance between water supply and demand, leading to chronic water scarcity.

My work reflects my personal response to this crisis and explores the profound consequences of water scarcity, particularly for the ancient city of Isfahan, while also resonating with similar challenges faced around the world. I am deeply concerned by the impact of diminishing water resources, not only on people’s lives, but also on the survival of nature and cultural heritage.

Excessive groundwater pumping creates underground voids that cause the land above to sink, a process known as land subsidence. This phenomenon poses a serious threat to both residential areas and irreplaceable historical monuments. With a background in the rehabilitation of historic structures, I believe that preserving our built heritage is essential for connecting future generations to their history, identity, and collective memory. The loss of these monuments would erase not only remarkable architecture but also the customs, traditions, and stories they embody.

Through my work, I seek to raise awareness of the environmental and cultural consequences of unsustainable resource use and to encourage reflection on the fragile relationship between population growth, limited natural resources, and the preservation of our shared heritage.
